<image:title>About Well Haven - Emily Byl, Owner and Occupational Therapist</image:title>
<image:caption>Hello! I am Emily, a certified and licensed occupational therapist living in Anchorage, Alaska. Since graduating with my Masters in Occupational Therapy, I have worked in inpatient acute rehabilitation, skilled nursing facilities, acute care hospitals, schools, home health and telehealth settings with patients from birth to 100 years old. I am certified in Neurodevelopmental Treatment, Dementia Care, and I have earned the Executive Certificate in Home Modification from the USC Leonard Davis School of Gerontology. I was inspired to create my private practice to help older adults in Alaska live well, despite disability, in part due to the lack of resources I witnessed working in an Anchorage hospital. I felt for the patients who were discharged home and did not have access to support in their community, or if they did, it was too difficult to travel too. I have also been inspired by my grandparents, Dien, Gerrit, and Margaret. When my grandma Dien and grandpa Gerrit began to decline cognitively and physically, I witnessed first-hand the challenges families face to provide a safe yet dignified environment for loved ones. Although at that time I was not yet an OT, it made a lasting impact on me and gave me direction in my career. My grandma Margaret (Midge) is fortunate enough to have had long-term health insurance that has been crucial as she has developed Alzheimer’s Disease and now needs 24-hour care. I am very aware most older adults are not as fortunate, and it’s my goal to help patients and their families navigate old age in the most honorable and functional way possible. Outside of work, I love exploring Alaska’s wild places, drinking coffee, reading and spending time with family and my dogs.</image:caption>
